Senior Ecologists (Full-time)

Lizard Landscape Design and Ecology is seeking a Senior Ecologist to join our expanding, multi-disciplinary team based in Worthing, West Sussex.

Position Summary

Following continued growth, we are looking for an experienced Senior Ecologist to play a leading role in delivering high-quality ecological services across a diverse range of projects. Based in our brand-new Worthing office, with views stretching from the South Downs to the sea, you will work collaboratively alongside landscape architects, planners and arboricultural specialists.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and undertake ecological surveys, technical reporting and protected species licence applications.

  • Prepare mitigation strategies and review ecological assessments and supporting documents.

  • Deliver and oversee Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEA), Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA), Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) calculations and UKHab assessments.

  • Liaise confidently with clients, stakeholders and project teams to provide clear ecological advice.

  • Support and mentor junior team members, contributing to their professional development.

  • Contribute to a diverse portfolio of projects across multiple sectors throughout the region.

Person Specification

  • Full (or eligible) membership of CIEEM.

  • Holding at least one protected species licence, ideally bat and/or dormouse.

  • Strong UK/ROI botanical skills.

  • Experience with PEA, EcIA, BNG calculations and UKHab assessments.

  • EPS licence experience (desirable but not essential).

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to manage projects independently while working effectively within a team.

  • Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle insured for business use.

  • Work Environment and Conditions

  • This role offers a balance of fieldwork, report writing and project management responsibilities.

  • Hybrid working arrangements are available, with time spent in our brand-new Worthing office and on-site as required.

  • Flexibility may occasionally be required to accommodate survey season demands.

Landscape Planner (Full-time)

Lizard Landscape Design and Ecology is seeking a Landscape Planner to join our growing team in Worthing, West Sussex, working alongside our Technical Director of Landscape Planning. Our office enjoys views across the English Channel and the South Downs, providing an inspiring setting from which to shape landscapes and places of lasting value.

The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of Landscape and Visual Appraisals (LVA) and Landscape and Visual Impact Assessments (LVIA) for statutory EIA, under the guidance of our Technical Director.

At Lizard, landscape planning focuses on analysing landscape character and patterns to understand and respond positively to proposed landscape change. Our work seeks to influence better development outcomes by informing thoughtful, evidence-led design, and helping to create better places.

The role will include:

  • Undertaking landscape analysis and field survey work, including assessment of landform, landscape character, cultural heritage, and natural heritage assets;

  • Viewpoint photography and visual assessment work;

  • Production of figures and mapping using QGIS;

  • Preparation of graphics and reporting outputs using Adobe Illustrator and InDesign;

  • Supporting photomontage production using Adobe Photoshop;

  • Contributing to the development of verified visualisations and modelling capability;

  • Assisting with Landscape Sensitivity Studies and strategic landscape planning work, including renewable energy capacity assessments.

We are experiencing continued growth across our landscape planning services, providing an opportunity for the successful candidate to develop their skills across a diverse portfolio of projects.

About You - you are likely to be:

  • A Landscape Architect who is a Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute (CMLI), or working towards Chartership;

  • Alternatively, a promising graduate or someone from an allied discipline such as Town Planning may be considered;

  • Passionate about understanding landscapes spatially and descriptively, and interested in the interaction between the built environment, natural systems and habitats;

  • Enthusiastic about contributing to positive environmental and place-making outcomes.

A UK driving licence would be desirable.

Please note that we are currently unable to provide visa sponsorship for this role. However, a short-term contract arrangement may be considered for the right candidate.
